Hair Restoration Q & A

What is hair restoration?

Hair restoration is an outpatient procedure that uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to encourage the growth of new, healthy hair follicles. The treatment is quick, relatively pain-free, and presents few side effects. There's no downtime either so that you can return to work and other routine activities right away.

How does hair restoration work?

At Carolinas Health and Wellness, hair restoration is a three-step process.

Step one - Exam and review of your medical history

Before recommending hair restoration, your Carolinas Health and Wellness provider reviews your medical history and asks about your hair loss, including when it started, if it's the result of an underlying medical condition, and if you’ve tried over-the-counter treatments. If you’re in relatively good health and aren’t completely bald, you’ll likely qualify for restoration.

Step two - Blood draw

Next, your provider draws a sample of your blood. They put your sample into a centrifuge –– a machine that spins around, separating your platelets from the rest of your blood. Once that process is complete, your provider transfers the PRP solution to a syringe.

Step three - Scalp injections

Your provider mixes the PRP solution with an anesthetic and administers several injections into your scalp. Once the PRP solution enters your body, it increases blood flow to your scalp and triggers the production of new hair follicles.

How many hair restoration treatments will I need?

The number of hair restoration treatments you need depends on various factors, including the cause of your hair loss and the severity of your symptoms.

Carolinas Health and Wellness usually recommends three treatments spaced over a four to six-week period. Carolinas Health and Wellness recommends maintenance treatments every six months to maintain your results.

Is hair restoration safe?

Hair restoration with platelet-rich plasma is safe and usually well-tolerated, but it isn’t for everyone. That’s especially true if you take prescription blood thinners, are a heavy smoker, or drink lots of alcohol. Other conditions that might prevent you from benefiting from this type of treatment include:

  • Cancer
  • Chronic liver disease
  • An infection
  • Low platelet count
  • Chronic skin disease
